  • What should you use to clean your laser safety curtains?

What should I use to clean my Laser Safety Curtains? After talking with our manufacturer and several industrial laser safety customers, here are some recommendations on how to clean your curtains in a hospital or any medical setting. Lite soap and water may be used Windex or multipurpose cleaner 3M's HB Quat Disinfectant Cleaner Lite soap and water are ok for starters, but using the 3M cleaner has the added benefit of a disinfectant. Below are several statements from 3M's website about the product. 3M's Quat Disinfectant Cleaner is proven in killing the highly infectious hepatitis B virus (HBV), which is the leading cause of cirrhosis and cancer of the liver, the world's ninth largest killer. It's an ideal cleaning disinfectant for non-critical items, including environmental surfaces and patient care items. Not only does it comply with the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen standard, but the disinfectant cleaner also helps you simplify and standardize your disinfection protocol - all while helping to improve the overall safety of employees and customers/patients. I know there are additional cleaning agents used on the market, but this will give the Hospital Laser Safety Officer or manager a very good idea of what may be used. • Do windows need to be covered when using a laser?

A few times I have been told that people are using a piece of cloth to cover windows when they are using a laser. They believe that since the window is blocked to light that a laser beam will not pass through. This is NOT a true statement! This would be similar to saying, "I'm wearing a coat, so a bullet can't go through". In order to protect yourself from a bullet, you need o bulletproof vest or bulletproof windows. If you want to protect yourself, your staff, and visitors from a laser beam, you need certified laser protective materials. Most Class 4 and many Class 3B lasers present an eye hazard over very long distances. Therefore, it is imperative to have comprehensive laser safety protection in place wherever they are present. Ordinary curtains are rarely capable of stopping a laser beam and specially designed blocking products are required. Lasers are often added to a Healthcare Program without adequate window safety/protection. As a result, this puts the healthcare facility, its workers, patients, and visitors at significant risk of laser injury. Laser blocking blinds are a simple way to cover a window. They are relatively easy to install and easy to clean. The blinds can be mounted around the frame of the window, or they can be mounted inside a recessed area. The operation of the blind is controlled by a chain (most common) or crank handle. We also offer motorized blinds that can be controlled wirelessly. The blind is built into a white finish aluminum frame, which encapsulates the top, both edges, and bottom of the blind. This eliminates the possibility of laser beams passing around the sides of the blind, blocks out direct light, and provides a neat finish. The material used in the blinds is CE marked and certified to EN 60825-4 (Safety of Laser Products Part 4: Laser Guards). It is vital that the roller blinds are certified and the material has been tested to the relevant laser safety standards. If non-compliant material were to be used - for example - untested, uncertified sun-blocking material, this may have the potential to allow laser beams to penetrate the blind and consequently may cause harm to personnel and/or equipment. Please contact us with any questions you have regarding laser blocking blinds or other laser needs you may have at 770.332.0092 or contact@rtlasersafety.com.

  • Laser Safety Enclosures – Custom made to fit your facility

RT Technologies designs and manufactures custom laser safety enclosures. Our enclosures are tailor-made for your specific application. Whether you need a full sized room with a door for a robot, or a portable enclosure that can be moved from place to place, we have a solution for you. Room Size Laser Safety Enclosures Delivery for a room size enclosure is about 4-6 weeks (ARO). All of our enclosures include a complimentary US FDA CDRH and/or laser safety evaluation completed by our CLSO (Certified Laser Safety Officer). We design the enclosure to fit your needs. Whether you have a robot, conveyor belt, or any other automated parts, we can design an enclosure for your application. Portable Laser Safety Enclosures If you don’t need a permanent enclosure (usually needed for cutting and high powered lasers), we can help you design an enclosure that is movable. One example is having an open structure made from aluminum. We can then use custom laser blocking curtains to drape over it. This option could be easily moved and stored. Another option is having a more robust structure made of aluminum profiles. Eye bolts could be connected to the top, and then moved with a hoist. Alternatively, you could move it with a forklift. We are not limited to laser safety enclosures. We also provide acoustic, cutting, modular, splash, and automotive enclosures to name a few. When you need an enclosure for your new laser, please give us a call at 770-332-0092. Getting started is simple. We will have you fill out an enclosure worksheet. After that is filled out, we will have an initial call before we provide a quote.

  • How to find the optimal laser barrier

Laser Barriers range in size from a small window to a full enclosure that can encompass large airplane components. What do you need for your laser setup? Here are some things to consider when you are shopping for a laser barrier system. If you are operating a laser in an environment where only trained laser professionals have access to the room, then you may simply need a curtain to cover the window(s) or a movable barrier with castors. Curtains don't have to hang from a curtain rod. They can be attached to a surface with Velcro or magnets. This laser batter is easy to remove and store if needed If you are using a laser in a laboratory, then a curtain with a track may be the best option. The tracks can be straight, u shaped, or rectangular to section off a portion of a laboratory or room Laser enclosures are useful for robotic laser systems and can be made per the customer's needs. The enclosure can have doors, windows, and even a mezzanine (as seen in the picture below). All containment systems - whether industrial laser enclosures, assembly line laser enclosures, welding enclosures or other types of integrated automatic enclosures - can be outfitted with a laser interlock system to ensure safe personnel access via enclosure doors, windows, and equipment hatches Laser blinds can be used to cover windows and create a laser barrier These have either a chain or crank handle. Motorized blinds are also available. These can be wireless or dry contact. Wireless blinds can be triggered to go up and down all at the same time if they are in the same room These are custom made to fit the dimensions of your window. They can be installed inside the frame or outside the frame of the window Still not sure what laser barrier would work best for you? Contact us and we will provide you with the best option based on your application. Call us at 770.332.0092 or email us at contact@rtlasersafety.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

  • Sizing and Signage: How to Select LED Signs for your Facility

Safety signs are found in almost every area in office buildings and large facilities. Why are these signs important? They are informational and can also protect you, your staff, and visitors from hazards. For instance, our LED signs can be connected to an X-Ray machine. When the X-Ray machine is in use, the sign will light up in red and read "Danger X-Ray On". Therefore, this will inform personnel that the X-Ray is in use and they should take precautions. There are many uses for LED signs. I will discuss a few ways to select LED warning signs below. Ultra Signs Recently, we had a customer who had a need for a sign. They required a message to have both an English and Japanese message on the same sign so all of their workers could read it. We were up for the challenge and it was a great success! Now, all employees will be aware of when access is allowed and when a mission is in progress. This sign is an Ultra 790 three-state sign. It has two messages, one in green, and one in red Messages are in both English and Japanese The Ultra sign comes in three sizes: The Ultra 470 is 18.5" (w) x 7" (h) x 1" (d) The Ultra 790 is 31.1" (w) x 7" (h) x 1" (d) The Ultra 580 is 22.8" (w) 7" (h) x 1" (d) - The 580 is Waterproof! Mini LED Signs Our Mini signs are a great option for just about anywhere. For example, Holland America line uses this LED sign for Engine Control Room and Bridge entrances. They used the three state sign with ECR and Bridge Open/Closed messages. Another interesting application is confessionals! The sign is placed outside of the confessional and alerts parishioners if it is occupied. The uses are limitless - bathrooms, laboratories, industrial applications, medical facilities, etc. The dimensions for the sign are 6.3" (w) x 4.3" (h) x 1.5" (d) Slim Jim LED Signs Need a sign that is EASY to install? It doesn't get much easier than the Slim Jim LED sign. This sign is hard-wired - so you can hook it up to a 110 V light switch and you're done! Several of our Slim Jim customers are recording studios, police stations, meeting rooms in professional buildings, hotels, universities, etc. The dimension of the Slim Jim are: 14" (w) x 4" (h) x 0.4" (d) If you have an application and are not sure what sign to use, please give us a call at 770.332.0092 or email us at contact@rtlasersafety.com.

  • An Introduction to Laser Blocking Blinds

Laser Blocking Blinds are suitable for many applications involving the use of lasers. For example, use cases can be found in the Healthcare market - specially in patient operating rooms, ambulatory centers, and dentist / doctor offices. Our laser blocking blinds create a safe barrier between the laser and other supporting staff, patients, or visitors who may walk by. The blinds/shades are easy to install and aesthetically pleasing to the work environment. To clarify, the roller blind is built into a white finish aluminum frame. The frame encapsulates the top, and both edges of the laser blocking material. This sealed barrier eliminates any possibility of laser beams passing around the sides of the blind. The barrier also blocks our direct light (not blackout) and proves optimal safety and protection. The blinds are operated (changing of up/down position) by several methods: Chain (most common) Crank Handle Motorized (Dry Contact Switch or Wireless Remote Control) Blind installation is relatively easy. Therefore, maintenance or contracted installers can install the blinds. In addition, we provide installation instructions that can be downloaded from our website. However, should you run into problems while installing the blinds, our staff can provide immediate assistance. Laser Blocking blinds are manufactures based on the dimensions of your windows. Simply measure the size of the window opening (width by height) of the opening and forward them to us for a custom price quote. Lead time and delivery are typically around 3 weeks. Also, the blinds come with a 12-month limited warranty. Laser blocking window blinds do not require regular maintenance, as they can be cleaned with soapy water (mild detergent). Products such as Hlorsept (or equivalent) can be used. To clarify, abrasive cleaning materials must NOT be used. They can cause damage to the blind material. Most importantly, the blinds meet the following compliance standards: ASTM International ASTM E84 Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Material Conformite Europeene (CE) CE Marked International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) EN AW-6060 En 60285-4 Safety Laser Products - Part 4; Laser Guards National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) NFPA 701-2015 Test Method 1 - Flame Propagation NFPA 92-503 - Electric Burner Test Lasers are often added to a Healthcare Program without adequate window safety/protection. As a result, this puts the healthcare facility, its workers, patients, and visitors at significant risk of laser injury. Please contact us with any questions you may have regarding laser blocking blinds or other laser safety needs you may have. Please call us at 770.332.0092 or email us at contact@rtlasersafety.com
