  • Did you know that Potassium Iodide could do this??

Recommended purpose or use: Thyroid blocking agent for use in nuclear emergency involving the release of radioiodine. This medication is to be used in addition to measures to avoid exposure to radiation such as evacuation, shelter and agricultural and food measure to limit the sale and ingestion of radioiodine contaminated food. Each tablet contains: Potassium (Potassium iodide) 15.3 mg Iodine (Potassium iodide) 497 mg (The tabled information is provided courtesy of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission). Frequently Asked Questions About Potassium Iodide In Canada, Health Canada, or in the United States, the FDA, is the Federal agency responsible for decisions about appropriate thresholds and dosages for use of potassium iodide: What is potassium iodide? Potassium iodide is a salt, similar to table salt. Its chemical symbol is KI. It is routinely added to table salt to make it 'iodized'. Potassium iodide, if taken in time and at the appropriate dosage, blocks the thyroid glands uptake of radioactive iodine and thus could reduce the risk of thyroid cancers and other diseases that might otherwise be caused by exposure to radioactive iodine that could be dispersed by a terrorist activity or nuclear accident. What is the role of potassium iodide in radiological emergency preparedness? The purpose of radiological emergency preparedness is to protect people from the effects of radiation exposure after a dirty bomb or accident at a nuclear power plant. Evacuation is the most effective protective measure in the event of a radiological emergency because it protects the whole body (including the thyroid gland and other organs) from all radionuclides and all exposure pathways. However, in situations when evacuation is not feasible and in-place sheltering is substituted as an effective protective action, administering potassium iodide is a reasonable, prudent, and inexpensive supplement to evacuation and sheltering. Potassium iodide is a special kind of protective measure in that it offers very specialized protection. Potassium iodide protects the thyroid gland against internal uptake of radioiodines that may be released in the unlikely event of nuclear exposure. What is the benefit of taking potassium iodide during a radiological accident? When potassium iodide is ingested, it is taken up by the thyroid gland. In the proper dosage, and taken at the appropriate time, it will effectively saturate the thyroid gland in such a way that inhaled or ingested radioactive iodines will not be accumulated in the thyroid gland. The risk of thyroid effects is reduced. Such thyroid effects resulting from radioiodine uptakes due to inhalation or ingestion, or both, could result in acute, chronic, and delayed effects. Acute effects from high doses include thyroiditis, while chronic and delayed effects include hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer. Can individual members of the public obtain potassium iodide? Health Canada has approved potassium iodide as an over-the-counter medication. As with any medication, individuals should check with their doctor or pharmacist before using it. What are the recommended dosages of potassium iodide? Please see chart shown above. • Is there a first aid type kit for radiation? Yes, there is!

For the first time, using one easy Emergency RadDecon Kit you can safely, quickly, and significantly remove radioactive material from both yourself (intact skin and hair) and other surfaces. With this all-in-one kit you have everything you need to safely decontaminate yourself, your family, and all your important possessions in the event of a radiation emergency. For more information, please visit our website: Emergency RadDecon Kit May be Used on Intact Human Skin! The kit includes: Synthetic gloves for use during decontamination process (3 pair). Specialized Rad-Wipes (45 per package). Rad-Waste Trash Bags (2). Caution Labels (4) (Radioactive Material) for use with Trash Bags. Instructions for Use conveniently displayed on inside lid of case. MSDS Data Sheets (in manual, one for Each Solution – Color Coded) more information A convenient and sturdy hard plastic carrying case easily identifiable as an Emergency RadDecon Kit™ by its yellow and purple color scheme. A complete Instruction and Information Manual. PLEASE REVIEW ALL ENCLOSED MATERIALS CAREFULLY BEFORE USING OUR PRODUCTS Our products are currently in use to remove radioactive material in many nuclear power plants, in nuclear waste facilities and in hospitals with nuclear medicine departments throughout the United States and abroad. With the introduction of our new “all in one kit” we can now offer our products to the general public. Now our scientifically formulated products are available to all emergency staff including first responders, fireman and police. The Quick Decon QDTM Solution is extremely desirable to use for Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) RX Cavity cleaning and use in general at NPP’s because of its unique ability to remove the radioactive contaminants from solution WITHOUT binding or affecting the resin binding sites. The Decon solution has NO Ionics (available free radicals) and contains no detergents ---and thus is ‘inert’ to the resin materials. Thus, the active ‘sites’ for the Rad Waste resins are left uncompromised/unused and available to filter out the targeted contaminants from the RCS, etc. For the above reasons, and because the Quick Decon QDTM solution is 98% H2O, it passes straight through the resins with no negative effects. • New Portable Radiation Shield - ALARA Shield Tote

We are excited to announce a new product exclusively available from RT Technologies, Inc. The ALARA Shield Tote is a lightweight, lead-equivalent portable shield container that is extremely useful to transport highly radioactive tools, sample containers, etc. The ALARA shield tote can be used by Radiation Safety and Health Physics departments at nuclear facilities or medical facilities/universities to assist in reducing radiation exposure/dose to personnel tasked with transportation of radioactive material. The contemporary design of the shield, coupled with the effective gamma shielding of the lead-equivalent material, makes it a much lighter weight ALARA option (than traditional lead pigs.) Additionally, customized geometries or containers of this lead alternative material can be made upon request. ALARA stands for “as low as reasonably achievable”. ALARA means avoiding exposure to radiation that does not have a direct benefit to you, even if the dose is small. Typical use cases for the ALARA Shield tote are: Transportation of highly radioactive liquid samples contained in 1 liter (or smaller) poly bottles Transportation/storage of radioactive sources or tools Storage/transportation of Steam Generator Eddy Current probes Storage/transportation of high-level radioactive smears/wipes/trash Have more questions? • What should you use to clean your laser safety curtains?

What should I use to clean my Laser Safety Curtains? After talking with our manufacturer and several industrial laser safety customers, here are some recommendations on how to clean your curtains in a hospital or any medical setting. Lite soap and water may be used Windex or multipurpose cleaner 3M's HB Quat Disinfectant Cleaner Lite soap and water are ok for starters, but using the 3M cleaner has the added benefit of a disinfectant. Below are several statements from 3M's website about the product. 3M's Quat Disinfectant Cleaner is proven in killing the highly infectious hepatitis B virus (HBV), which is the leading cause of cirrhosis and cancer of the liver, the world's ninth largest killer. It's an ideal cleaning disinfectant for non-critical items, including environmental surfaces and patient care items. Not only does it comply with the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen standard, but the disinfectant cleaner also helps you simplify and standardize your disinfection protocol - all while helping to improve the overall safety of employees and customers/patients. I know there are additional cleaning agents used on the market, but this will give the Hospital Laser Safety Officer or manager a very good idea of what may be used. You are welcome to contact us regarding what cleaning agent you are using today, and we will be happy to address if it is appropriate to clean your laser safety curtains.
